On the 12th October, 2002, on the Indonesian island of Bali, a terrorist attack happened on the resort town of Kuta which devastated the whole entire nation. This deadly event killed 202 and injured 209 innocent people. The deaths in the bombing were mainly foreign tourist especially Australia but roughly one fifth were Indonesian nationals.
The Bali bombing involved 3 bombs, 2 at the Kuta district nightclub and 1 other smaller on outside the American embassy. On the 12th October at approximately 23:05 a suicide bomber entered Paddy’s Bar with a bomb inside his backpack. People injured and wounded immediately evacuated into the streets while a second bomb in a van parked outside the Sari Club (opposite the Paddy’s Bar) went off. This was a much more powerful bomb then the first one. This explosion left a one meter deep crater.
The third bomb was a small bomb which went off out side the American consulate in Denpasar. This bomb did small damage which included minor injuries and minimal damages to property.
When I first heard this news on the television a few years ago, I was shocked and terrified. I felt sorry for the people in Bali and I really wanted to get on a plane and lend a hand. This is event has affected Bali’s tourism because people are scared this incident might happen again. This has lead companies to earn lesser each year.
12th October 2002, this day will always be remebered as day where lives were lost in this deadly terrorist attack.

On the 26th of June Carlingford High School had its Senior Dance/Drama Night Matinee & Art Exhibit in the hall. The Performance started after recess round about 11:30am with an address from Ms M. The Perfomance consisted of dances from years 7 to 12 and acts from the year 10 drama group.
The first act was called “Bats Make Me Crazy.” It was about a clown toy who tricked the other toys in a dark dark box where all the unwanted toys go. At the end the clown locks the the box and hides the key.
After the act, some yr 11 students did dance solos which were pretty boring because they were slow and went for ages. Next, were some other dramas/acts, one of them was about a girl falling in love with a boy but at the end, the boy confessed he was gay which I found quite amusing.
This act was followed by other solo, duo, and groups performing other entertaining acts and dances. Overall I quite liked the performances but some weren’t quite engaging/interesting. To make the exhibit a bit more interesting, I would’ve added some music performances into the exhibit. Hopefully there would be more exhibits like this one to show the talants hidden inside students.
An International Day was held on the 19th July at a Public High School in Carlingford. Everyone in the school participated in this enormous event by wearing their countries colourful national colours.
The day for Carlingford High School started off with two normal periods and an international concert starting after recess. The concert started with a fashion parade which showed decorative clothes which foreign country’s wore, which then was followed by consecutive acts and performances about international day or their country’s. Some performances were singing, playing an instrument or dancing.
Half way through period four, the concert ended with an astonishing applause. The next minute people were running out of the hall to visit stalls which sold their countries food, drinks, posters and games. Some stalls were China, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, Korea and Taiwan/Hong Kong.
The successful International day ended at around about 2:30 pm and everyone went home.
“The fastest hands in the East versus the biggest mouth in the West”
Rush Hour is a movie full of comedy and action.
Detective Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) is one of the best cops of the Royal Hong Kong Police who works alone. Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) an arrogant, big-mouthed LAPD who has gone through more partners then you can count, are put together to follow up a kidnapping of a chinese consul’s daughter. Both detectives want to solve the case on their own while the FBI just want them out of their way. Can the fastest hands in the East and the biggest mouth in the West combine together and close the case?
Rush Hour is full of classic Kungfu action and continuous comedy. It has good film techinique with close ups, fades and different camera angles and fabulous acting from Chris Tucker and incredible but safe stunts from Jackie Chan. Overall I would rate this movie a 8/10 and I would recommend it to any mature audience under 15 or over although the movie is rated M15+.
A normal enjoyable school day was just wrecked when our english teacher said speech time. I was shocked and terrified because i HATED speeches. Once I arrived home, I sat at my study desk and thought and thought and thought of what to speak about. I was thinking for about 2 hrs and I still hadnt thought of a good topic soo i decided to give up and leave it for later.
A week later i decided to do any topic and just write and practise the speech before it was too late. First I was thinking about being a reporter and descibing what happened in Indonesia, after a tsunami had struck their country. Later on i decided the topic was too complicated so i decided to talk about teachers. Writing the speech only took me 1 hr so I practised for 30 minutes.
Today it was the day for our speeches I was soo nervous that I nearly started vomiting. The teacher picked our names from a box but my name didnt come out, soo i guessed i had to do my speech the next lesson.
Today is the next lesson and my name still hasnt come out of the box. I then realised that there were on 4 speeches left soo I was positive that I had to do it next lesson.
Last day for speeches, the teacher pulled my name out of the box, i was the last person to say my speech. This is what I said:
Teachers aren’t they a strange group of people? We have all encountered teachers in our past. Some were tall some were short some were thin and some not so thin. Some were kind, some were angry some happy and some not so happy particularly when certain members of a class didn’t co-operate.
Everyday in our lives except for those terrible holidays which I am sure that none of us really enjoyed we saw them and we had to be with them and they, with us.
Sometimes they would be standing, sometimes walking, sometimes quiet and sometimes they were very, very very loud. Sometimes they stood in groups, sometimes they stood alone and when you were in trouble it was always best to be as far away as you could be from them.
I know that when I was in early Primary School I thought that teachers lived in the school only coming out of their staffrooms at 9.00am to start annoying us and then like a strange mist or fog they would disappear at three and stay at the school until the next day.
I couldn’t believe they had a life outside of school. I found it difficult to imagine them having a home or family to return to, washing their pet or having arguments with their own children.
I know that when we look back on those days we tend to only remember the bad teachers that we had however I know that I had some really good ones. They cared about my learning, they cared about their classes and they cared about me as a person. I imagine that at least one person in this class will eventually go on to University and end up back in a classroom in front of a whole group of annoying kids like us and I wish that person all the luck they could need in the future.
I used to imagine a world without teachers when I was younger and used to make up all these other jobs for the teachers I didn’t like . One was my local garbologist and I used to imagine him being constantly covered in flies while he heaved garbage bins from front lawn to garbage truck. Another teacher I imagined as an astronaut disappearing up into space and never returning but unfortunately that never happened. They would always be there the next day.
I suppose though that we really couldn’t do without teachers so when I look back on those days I have to be glad of the help that I was given to get me where I am today and that is in front of all of you giving a speech.
Around Anzac Day 2006, three miners became trapped while mining gold at Beaconsfield, Tasmania. For the next thirteen days, Australia and other parts of the world waited patiently reading newspapers, listening to radio reports and viewing the news off TV. It was frightening to me to imagine myself being trapped 1 kilometre below the surface of the earth. I was anxious for the two men still alive and also sad for Larry Knight the miner who lost his life in this traggic accident.
Brant Webb, Todd Russel and Larry Knight were employed to mine gold at Beaconsfield Gold Mine, a small town in Tasmania. They became trapped, and for the next thirteen days their unpleasant condition was reported on by many media crews who spent their entire time in Beaconsfield covering the accident. Owing to a small tremor, these 3 men became trapped 1 km under the earth. Any access for escape became impossible. Engineers worked for many days to dig and create an escape route to save these man’s lives. Even though one miner Larry had died, two others remained trapped in a cage without acess to food, water or communication.
There was little I could do to help except wish the men good luck and families the support of the Beaconsfield community. I felt anxious for the 13 days as the attempt to save the miners was a longterm and difficult process. It made me realise just how fragile life can be. One moment I am walking along the street, the next minute I could be Sophie Delezio struggling for her life in Westmead Childrens Hospital.
Commercialism is a powerful attraction and influence over people. We live in a globalised world where big business, national and international companies, aim is to make large profits. Easter is an opportunity to make these profits.
In Australia, the public is given a public holiday ‘Good Friday’ to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. He supposedly died for man’s sins. The rest of the weekend attached to that particular Friday, is also regarded as a part of Easter. However big business has found a way to increase their profit by symbolically using the Easter Bunny and Chocolate Eggs. The Easter egg symbolises the rebirth/new born aspects of Jesus Christ’s ressurection. The Easter Bunny symbolises reproduction and also this rebirth.
I would imagine that there would be more children looking forward to their Easter Eggs than looking forward attending church. I would also suggest that to enter a Primary school and interview the majority of students about “the true meaning of easter” we would find low statistics of children knowing of even understanding the true meaning of easter. They would be more concerned about the amount or size of the Easter Eggs they will be receiving.
Often we hear about the over commercialism of not only Easter, but Christmas, Valentines Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Our thoughts should also go to the idea that in a Western Culture where money and profit play such a large part, it is not surprising to find that the “true meaning of Easter has been lost by the commercialism surrounding it.
The story that i have been reading is called Specky Magee and the The Boots of Glory. The book is about a 15 year old boy named Specky Magee who receives a scholarship to go and play Aussie Rules Footaball for Gosmore Grammer (a very famous footy school). At his new school, he faces many problems like initiations, blackmail, fiting in with his new friends, and having to play against his old footy team.
Specky and Tim Barton are two students who recieved scholarships for playing Aussie Rules Football for Gosmore Grammar. Every twenty-five years, Gosmore Grammar and Salisbury College compete for the Boots Of Glory which is a game the first two principles of both schools sat down and came up with to prove their school was better than the other school in every way, especially when it came to footy. The winner could keep the boots until the next Boots of Glory match. This year was the time for the next Boots Of Glory match.
Because Specky and Tim are new to Gosmore Grammar, they’re new mates make them do initiations before they can be apart of their group. Their mates tell Specky and Tim to steal the Boots and bring them back to their dormitory, and then take them back in one night. When Specky and Tim were stealing the boots, Specky was caught on digital camera taking his balaclava off and putting the boots on to have a kick with them. From that day on, Specky receives anonymous letters on his bed side telling him to sabotage the Boots of Glory match. Since he received his first blackmail letter, Specky sets himself a task to find out who is this anonymous person.
Later on in the book, Specky discovers the person who has been putting letters on his bed side was his very own friend Tim Barton, but Tim was receiving orders by this kid who calls himself Crusha, and Crusha was receiving orders by a guy named Mr X. Tim finally tells Specky about this note telling him to agree with sabotaging the Boots of Glory match before giving him a scholarship to play for Gosmore Grammar. Specky and Tim set themselves a task to find who is Mr X.
At the end, Specky and Tim discovers that one of their coaches was Mr X, but Specky and Tim try to ignore the letter and concentrate on the Boots of Glory match. When the final whistle blew, Gosmore Grammar celebrated their glorious win over Salibury College. Unfortunately, Specky was immediately expelled from Gosmore Grammar when the principle saw the photos of Specky stealing the Boots.
I thought this book was engaging because it had an addictive storyline and it had many complications. In think the book shows a very clear example of peer pressure and blackmail which makes the book interesting and its climax was very exciting because you didnt know what was going to happen next.
Saint Patrick’s given name was Maewyn Succar and he was born in Britain in the year 387AD to Calpurnius and Conchessa who were romans living in Britain. When Maewyn was around 16 years old, his village was raided by the Irish and he was captured and sold as a slave in Ireland. After 6 years of slavery,Maewyn escaped and went to a monastary where he studied under St Germanus, the bishop of Auxerre. This is where Maewyn adopted the christian name Patrick and became a bishop. Patrick was sent to Ireland to convert pagans into christianity which was a big success. In Ireland Patrick established monasteries and set up schools and churches. Saint Patrick died on March 17th 461 AD.
Saint Patrick’s day is important because it is a remembrance day of what Saint Patrick did in Ireland and it commemorates his death. The day is important to the Irish and the Irish-Americans because Saint Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland. On March 17, people wear green because Ireland is also known as “The Emerald Isle” and green is the colour of spring.
